James is a Partner & Managing Director in the Risk practice at AlixPartners, and is based in London. James supports clients in resolving disputes in the financial services sectors drawing on his expertise in profitability assessment, valuation and risk topics.

His work is often conducted in contentious, high-profile situations in which expert determinations are required to support an assessment of damages, protect companies from regulatory intervention, or to support a restructuring.

He provides expert witness services under instruction from counsel in both litigation and arbitration and has been engaged to give evidence in The High Court, ICSID and ICC Arbitration, The Royal Courts of Jersey, The Court of Session, The General Court of the EU and the CMA.

He has worked as an interim executive including as Group CFO of LCH.Clearnet, Europe’s leading central securities depository.

James if a Fellow of the ICAEW and a founding member of the valuation special interest group. He holds degrees from universities in England and the United States. 

Key Engagements:

  • James was the valuation lead in the development of the Asset Protection Scheme. The APS protected over £530billion of assets held by RBS and LBG underpinning their balance sheets during the global financial crisis.
  • James is currently instructed to support institutional investors in claiming damages from the Single Resolution Board of the European Union following its decision to resolve Banco Popular in 2016.
  • Appointed as testifying expert regarding the alleged issuance of a false-rights issue prospectuses issued by RBS and Cattles.
  • Instructed by a clearing bank to support it during the CMA sector inquiry into retail banking where he addressed questions concerning product profitability and profitability by customer segment.
  • James was instructed as valuation expert by counsel for the claimants SICL and Samba.
  • Instructed as a regulatory capital expert in Manchester Building Society and Grant Thornton.
