Health, hygiene, home, and habits – the new drivers of consumer behaviour

There has been much speculation on the change in consumer habits as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Some seem obvious – such as an increase in online shopping – but what are the underlying drivers of these changes.

AlixPartners has identified four priorities for consumers. We believe these will be prevalent for the next 18 – 24 months and will have a wide ranging impact on how we shop, dine, entertain ourselves and engage with the world of commerce.

Businesses need to acknowledge these and build their proposition and service offering accordingly. While official guidelines and advice may differ from country-to-country, these priorities will take some time to adjust back to previously established patterns of behaviour – if at all.

In many respects this is marked evolution in our concept of the ‘self-centric consumer’ where safety and wellbeing have become priority considerations for consumers.

The most impactful changes to consumer behavior can be segmented into four areas: health, hygiene, home, and habits. The impact on consumer behavior across these four areas will have significant implications for companies.
