Long-term thinking about supply chain is critical to post-virus recovery

This is an excellent decision made by these retailers and brands. The burden of Covid-19 needs to be shared across the supply chain; it is not sustainable to put all of the short-term pain at one end of the supply chain.

Retailers need to think strategically about supply base relationships and how to come out of the crisis with the partnerships they need. This crisis is likely to have a long term impact on sourcing strategy, flexibility / security of supply chain, inventory management and apparel assortments. Those that start thinking about this early will be the winners in the long term.

A number of top global apparel brands on Tuesday assured their local suppliers that they (brands) would receive shipments of goods already produced, sources said. The buyers include M&S, Target, Inditex, Kiabi and PVH, they said, adding that another brand H&M, one of the largest buyers, gave a similar assurance earlier, which came as a sigh of relief for local suppliers amid coronavirus pandemic.
