Landmark legal ruling on liability for a data breach

This time, something unrelated to COVID-19 ... the UK Supreme Court has overturned previous judgements and found the retailer Morrisons not liable for the actions of a malicious employee who stole the staff database and leaked it, along with names, addresses and bank account details of all the staff. 

What does this mean for firms? It means potentially one less thing to worry about with regard to class actions after a data breach, however it remains absolutely critical to follow legal and regulatory requirements for privacy and to adopt sound, risk-based cybersecurity measures for prevention and response.
